Larry King Fighting Heart Disease

Larry king fights heart disease

PBS just had a great program on Heart disease, that ended in a round table with Larry King. King had a heart attack and bypass surgery in 1987.

More Women die of Heart Disease than all cancers combined.  It is a HUGE deal.

Tired Child, Fat Child

No Sleep, Fat Kid

A new Study, showed a corrolation between Sleep and Obesity in Children.  Those kids that slept more, had lower BMI’s.

“Literature suggests that with restricted sleep comes changes in certain hormones that could alter intake of food,” said Dr. Robert Vorona, a sleep specialist and an associate professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. “Leptin (which decreases food intake) and ghrelin (which increases food intake) are respectively reduced and increased by lack of sleep.”

Misleading Media

I recently posted on the effects of Grape juice vs. Wine and their effects on Cardiovascular disease.  But, as Mike Roussel points out on his blog, the article I sited was misleading.  While the study certainly bought up some interesting possibilities, it was clearly not saying that Grape juice could give the same benifits as red wine.

But, don’t delude yourself into believing that Wine is the answer to your heart problems.

Wine for the Heart? Drink Grape Juice Instead.

Grape Juice just as good for the Heart as Wine

I can’t tell you how many people I know who use the excuse, “I’m drinking this wine for my heart,” to justify their excessive alcohol consumption.

Not only is this a strange devils bargain they’re making, but there is little reason to believe that the effects are warranted.

Here is more fodder for the fire, from a recent French study:

“Grape juice can have a similar effect (against heart disease) as red wine but without the alcohol. That is a very important message,” said Dr Valerie Schini-Kerth, lead author of the study published in the journal Cardiovascular Research.

I've fallen and I CAN get up!

An elderly man takes a stroll in Datteln, Germany in this April 16, 2006 file photo. Older people who have long been physically active, and remain so, have better balance than less vigorous seniors, while those who pick up the exercise after retirement fare almost as well, French researchers report. According to new research, seniors who stay active maintain balance and body control much better than their sedentary counterparts.  What I found interesting was this:

However, individuals who exercised in the past, but stopped after retirement, had balance control nearly as bad as those who had never been active, Dr. Philippe Perrin of the Universite Henri Poincare-Nancy, Villers-les-Nancy, and colleagues report.

In otherwords, it doesn’t matter if you were a star athlete in highschool, or college.  If you aren’t training now, you are no longer an athlete, and it will catch up with you.

Stay exercising and stay upright.

Onions kill your Breath, and Cancer

Onion fights Cancer

Numerous studies done in the US, Italy, France, and China have concluded that the more onions you eat (in any form, cooked, raw, etc), the lower your cancer risk.   And they were found benificial for many types of tumors, including Breast, Mouth, Throat, Esophagus, Kindney, Prostate, and Colon cancers.

So, get stinky and stay healthy!

Italian Food is Healthy?

Science Daily reported that Cagliari, Italy, A small Italian town in the Sardinian province of Nuoro has been named as one of healthiest places in the world.

Why are these Italians so healthy?  Mainly because they live the way we all know we are supposed to, but don’t.

They have physical jobs (exercise);  eat a diet based around protein (and lots of fish), fruits, vegetables, good fats (like Olive Oil), and whole grains;  and have a low stress lifestyle.

We bring most of our maladies onto ourselves (I’m certainly no exception).  But, if living is a goal worth attaining, then the steps required must be taken if we wish to achieve it.

The plan is relatively simple.

Alzheimer's Hard to Spell? Learn German.

A study at the Baycrest Research Centre for Aging and the Brain, published in the journal Neuropsychologia, looked at 184 patients , who showed up with complaints of mental decline.

The study found that those patients who spoke more than one language had developed the cognitive impairment, on average, 4 years later than those patients that spoke only one language.

It’s another reminder that your brain is like the rest of your body.  It needs exercise too.

Homocysteine the dietary Frankenstein

In my Previous post I highlighted a compound in Muscle Milk called GCC or glycocyamine, and the horrible effects it can have on you.  Going deeper, the real problem is that glycocyamine increases the levels of Homocysteine in your body, and that is all kinds of bad.

Click here for a list of the effects.

In short they are:  Cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, nerve damage, decreased concentration, dementia, Alzheimer’s, and more.

And it isn’t just GCC and Muscle Milk that are the culprits for bringing this amino into your body.   Truth is it can arise from a number of sources, like low levels of thyroid hormone, kidney disease, psoriasis, or some medicines.  But, the main reason is diet … or rather a bad diet low in Folic Acid, Vit. B6 and Vit. B12.

Normally homocysteine is transformed into other amino acids that your body then can use.  But if you don’t have enough B vitamins to help this process take place, then your homocysteine levels can get out of whack.

Luckily, there are some preventative measures.

From mid-1998, the USA and Canada have been adding folic acid to basic foods including flour. The result: 31,000 less deaths due to strokes per year and 12,800 less due to heart attacks. – (www.homocysteine.net)

Many natural foods are high in folic acid and B vitamins, including:

  • Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, savoy cabbage, curly kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and asparagus.
  • Citrus fruits particularly oranges and grapefruits
  • Pulses such as black-eyed beans and chickpeas
  • Wholegrain cereals

Eat them, and supplement with a B complex containing a good 400mcg (micrograms) of Folic Acid.  It could save your life.

Muscle Milk Gone Sour

There has been a lot of talk in the last year or so regarding Muscle Milk (from Cytosport), a protein drink that tastes absolutely AMAZING, and one of it’s ingredients GCC (or Glycocyamine), which they claim is a precursor to Creatine and would therefor increase your bodies natural production of this coveted macronutrient.

The trouble is that GCC turns out to be highly toxic and damaging to both your heart and your nervous system, making you more likely to die of a heart attack, and suffer from Alzheimer’s. Which the last time I checked, was kinda the opposite of what we fitness types are trying to go for.

Check out this article over at T-Mag

I am very very sad, as I LOVE muscle milk. It is BY FAR the greatest tasting protein drink ever created. I don’t mean that lightly. I have been downing chalky, bitter, over flavored protein drinks for over 12 years, and I have never had anything come close.

The saddest part is that GCC is completely irrelevant to the product. They don’t need it. they could toss it out tomorrow and their sales would likely rise significantly. Everyone I know who stopped drinking it because of the GCC, only did so for health concerns … and it was a hard one. It’s that good.

I urge Cytosport to wake up and get with the program. People don’t by your product because they think the GCC will help them gain more MASS. They buy if for the taste, and because the protein quality is high. Why do you insist on driving your product into the ground?
