Of course, the purpose isn’t to downplay the fact that human rights abuses exist in free democracies, rather to point out the appalling silence surrounding the abuses in others.
This silence is a direct consequence of the threat of violence that awaits all those who would dare to open their mouths about it. By speaking out against these abuses, the members of those countries are putting their lives on the line, whereas in free countries (like America, Israel, etc), the press and public are free to speak up without any physical risk to themselves.
Freedom of speech is essential to combating human rights violations. In non-free countries, this freedom to speak does not exist.
