I never give a crap what other people’s “opinions” are. I DO care about what is TRUE.
Throughout history, popular opinion has usually been on the WRONG side of the truth — especially when it comes to anything ethical. From science to slavery, humans have gotten nearly everything wrong.
The reason we had to invent the scientific method is because our brains process information in the exact opposite way.
I make a clear distinction between Scientific Consensus and Popular Opinion. The first had to go through the vetting process of the scientific method, and is under constant threat from that method of being dethroned. The second is complete bullshit, based on emotion, bias, and familiarity.
Here are my general rules of thumb:
- I trust that the Scientific Consensus is true, unless compelling evidence suggests otherwise.
I trust that Popular Opinion is FALSE, unless compelling evidence suggests otherwise.
That’s right! If it’s popular, it’s likely stupid. If it’s agreed upon by expert scientists in their field, I’ll believe it unless I have good reason not too.
In other words: I trust the scientific process more than I trust humans.
Now go lift something heavy,
PS. The pic at the top is of my buddy Chip Conrad, who’s leg is being supported by our lifter Eli. Chip is wearing our PR unicorn hat, because he had just hit a PR snatch! Also: #Bromance.
